ONE- AND TWO-ROOM HOMES
The former police station on Store Kongensgade is being transformed into contemporary rental homes in the heart of Copenhagen K. The project will create an architectural oasis in a central city setting, with balconies and a characterful, split-level courtyard facing south-east.
Most of the homes in the building are one-room studio apartments, some with balconies. A smaller number of two-room apartments, all with balconies, are located on the top floor. The bright, modern interiors are designed around practical use and comfortable everyday living in the city. In the main room, white walls, doors and window frames provide space for a study or work area as well as a combined sofa and sleeping area. Each home has a well-planned kitchen section suited to both simple meals and more elaborate cooking, and a bathroom with a wall-hung toilet, shower enclosure and underfloor heating. The details have been carefully considered, while leaving room for residents to furnish and arrange the homes personally.
The building on Store Kongensgade is being renovated throughout to give it a modern appearance. Its existing façades will be clad in beautiful tombak, a material with a golden-brown colour resembling copper, bringing a lively and durable character to the exterior. The façade surfaces alternate between smooth and perforated, creating a considered interplay of light and appearance. Large floor-to-ceiling windows will bring abundant daylight inside. The five uppermost apartments facing Store Kongensgade will have balconies with room for furniture and screening between neighbours. The exterior window frames will be made of coloured aluminium in a tone that complements the tombak, giving the architecture a distinctive and harmonious identity.
On the courtyard side, the building's volume is extended with attached modules, alternating between open and closed forms. This creates a varied exterior facing the courtyard, while allowing light to move in and out of the homes; the effect is reinforced by the façade's golden material, colour variations and large windows. Several apartments also have inviting balconies overlooking the courtyard. The building's high-ceilinged ground floor will house a grocery shop, accessed from Store Kongensgade. The police station dating from the 1970s will thus become a refined and prominent presence in the streetscape, designed to sit considerately among the surrounding Neoclassical architecture.
The area around the homes is one of the city's most sought-after. Old palaces and grand properties stand alongside renovated shopfronts, yoga studios and a wide range of dining experiences on the well-known street, established in 1650 and running from Østerport Station to Kongens Nytorv as the westernmost traffic artery in Copenhagen's oldest district, Frederiksstaden. City life thrives in many forms here, close to some of the capital's foremost attractions: Marmorkirken is just metres away, while Nyhavn, Ofelia Beach and Toldboden are only a short walk away. Kastellet, Kongens Have and the waterfront offer running routes, alongside shopping, cosy coffee bars, galleries, fitness centres and Sunday brunch with friends.
The minimum rental period is 9 months, with 3 months' notice. Please note that the photographs show a demonstration apartment.
