The City Houses in Haderslev offer a unique living experience right in the heart of the town. Currently, a significant renovation project is scheduled for 1627 Haderslev City Houses, specifically affecting the sections Catharinaheim, Høppners Gård, and Olaf Ryesvej. These buildings will undergo extensive refurbishment, during which some apartments will be merged. Consequently, residents in the impacted units might need to be temporarily or permanently relocated. This process will be managed by the Haderslev Housing Association, with further details to be provided as the renovation approaches. The work is expected to commence at the beginning of 2023 and conclude by the end of 2025. Rent adjustments will occur following the renovation, and those interested can contact the Haderslev Service Centre at haderslev@udlejer for additional information. The apartments are situated in a historic former girls’ home, accompanied by a spacious, protected garden resembling a park. Originally constructed in 1890 by a wealthy individual as a tribute to his mother, these buildings have served various purposes over time, including as a girls’ home, and now function as family and youth housing along with a municipal shared living arrangement. The structures were fully renovated in 1990 and feature three stories with small-paned windows. The red brick façade is decorated with light limestone details. Elegant staircases lead up to the apartments, which differ notably in size and layout. The shared grounds include large, tree-shaded green spaces, a sports field, and seating areas with tables and benches. Located very close to Damparken, the fjord, and the inner pond, each unit is equipped with its own bathroom and kitchen that vary in dimensions and design. All kitchens include a cooker hood, stove, and either a combined fridge-freezer or a refrigerator with a freezer compartment. Ventilation is ensured through central extraction systems in kitchens and bathrooms. Residents are permitted to install washing machines, condenser dryers, and dishwashers, though if these appliances are not already present, it is the tenant’s responsibility to arrange installation. Every apartment includes fixed cupboards, and tenants have the option to rent a lockable basement storage room.
Payments for water and heating are collected monthly in advance through the landlord. Heating charges are billed directly by the utility provider, except in the youth housing units where heating costs are included in the rent.
Located mainly in historical buildings within central Haderslev, the City Houses stand in an area steeped in history. Many structures date back several centuries, offering a living environment with few residents per building, varied apartment styles, preserved original wooden floors, decorative ceilings, irregular angles, and impressive façades set against cobblestone streets. Some newer constructions are also part of the department, found in areas such as Dannevirkestræde, Høppners Gård, parts of Klosteret, or Naffet. The department provides a common room in Lavgade and guest apartments at Store Klingbjerg, which accommodate two and four persons respectively, and include kitchenettes, private bathrooms, and toilets. Additional photographs are available on the department’s website.
The neighborhood of Haderslev offers a well-rounded urban experience. Known for its picturesque cathedral and historic architecture, the town boasts a vibrant center filled with numerous specialty shops, gyms, restaurants, and cafes. The nearby fjord and inner pond provide opportunities for fishing, sailing, and nature-based activities. Visitors can enjoy guided walks with the town guards, explore Gram Castle, or participate in a variety of cultural events hosted locally. The motorway is just 5 kilometers away, with Kolding located 25 kilometers from Haderslev and the Danish-German border approximately 45 kilometers distant.
